How many times have you seen people studying their smart-phones whilst shopping? You may assume that they are just keeping in touch with friends on Facebook or colleagues via LinkedIn.  However, they may well be doing something quite different, they could be checking whether the prices displayed in the shop are the best prices available or checking out the locality for a recommended wine bar or restaurant.

Whether we like it or not, mobile phones and in particular smart-phones give us immediate access to real-time information, enabling us to check for the best deals and get feedback on the quality of service at a restaurant before you venture inside.

You can now even download an application that can scan and read a barcode and tell you the product, identify where it can be bought and for what price, the results can be quite eye opening.

It is important for businesses to be on these directories and hopefully receive positive feedback by customers and clients. If you found yourself in Newbury or London needing to take a client out for dinner and were not familiar with the local restaurants what would you do? Probably seek recommendations from either the client or perhaps the hotel reception. Alternatively you could go to www.yelp.co.uk from your smart-phone and search nearby for restaurants and read reviews by people who have experienced the quality and the service.

There is of course no guarantee that the review is accurate or even fair, but if 12 people are saying the same thing then it gives a pretty good indication.

So; have you added your business to Google Local, uploaded a profile of your business, perhaps created a coupon offering a discount to people, taken ownership of your business page on Yelp or any of the other location based applications?

Do you ask your customers and clients for recommendations or reviews, if not perhaps this is something to consider doing, if fact we are going to do that right now......
